Use only correct tools mentioned in the Tools for Setup article. Do not use worn-out bits.
The procedure below shows how to install the Nordsense device. Please, follow the provided guidelines.

1 Find the waste bin |
Make sure to spot the correct bin at a predefined location. | Follow the guidelines provided by the supervisor regarding the selection of the waste bin.
2 Check the surface of the lid in the waste bin |
Make sure that surface is not contaminated and there are no potential obstacles for installation. | If the surface is contaminated, use isopropyl alcohol mentioned in the Tools for Setup article in order to clean the surface. If there is an obstacle, find the most optimal way of installing the device. |
|
3 Locate the position, where sensor should be installed |
If sensor is going to be installed on a lid – make sure that device is pointing down to the center of the container's bottom. If sensor is not going to be installed on a lid – make sure to follow Nordsense instructions. |
Determine the center point of the lid with the least possible tolerance. The device should be pointing down to the center of the container's bottom. | ![]() |
4 Prepare before drilling the holes |
Place the drilling template at the determined center of the lid and slightly drill two (or use "Punching tool") uttermost angular holes to create orientation points for drilling, depending on which model (FLAT or TALL) of Nordsense sensors you are going to install. |
Make sure you have the right type of bit mentioned in the Tools for Setup article. There are different bits for drilling different types of holes, including the brad point bit, forstner bit, expansive bit, auger bit, multi-angle bit and flat wood bit. |

5 Drill the holes |
When the points are prepared for drilling, remove the drilling template and drill two holes through. Reduce the speed of the drill when hole is made, and slowly pull the bit out. Switch the drill off when the bit is completely out of the hole. If you switch the power off while the bit is in the hole, you will not be able to remove the bit. |
Remember to use protective eye-wear for safety precautions mentioned in the Tools for Setup article! Besides that, always remember to start drilling at a low speed and then slowly increase the drill speed to avoid potential damage and overheating issues of the bit. |
|
6 Check and clean the holes |
Check if the holes are properly drilled and clean up drill dust after. | For the cleaning purpose use microfiber cloth mentioned in the Tools for Setup article.
7 Prepare the tape on the bottom of device (optional) |
Make sure that the tape is ready for additional mounting and subsequent stability purposes. |
Remember to follow the Step 2 in order to avoid the instability of mounting. In some cases, you might need to use two tapes glued on top of each other due to deepening in the bottom part of the device. |
|
8 Pair the device via Nordsense Walker app |
Peel off the sticker from the lens and scan the NFC tag, where the inscription "Nordsense" is located in order to pair and register the device. | In order to pair the device, please follow the guidelines mentioned in the article Sensor Activation→Activation.
9 Prepare two rivets with two washers (optional) |
Compressible (soft) materials, namely container lids made out of plastic, do not provide a firm base for clinching blind rivets. In such cases, it’s best to add support. One technique is to put a washer against the compressible material, with the rivet head on top of the washer. |
Washers could sometimes be eliminated by using a large-flange rivet, with the compressible material under the flange. Despite that, our suggestion is to use washers, if local temperature is constantly either above 30°C or below -15°C and the rivets are constantly (>4 hours) exposed to the UV light, namely the sun. This approach is resistant against photo-degradation of metal-to-plastic bond. |
|
10 Place the rivets |
Place two rivets with two attached washers through the holes with mandrel heads and washers pointing down. |
Use the rivets mentioned in the Tools for Setup article. Place them with the shell pointing down in the obtained holes during the Step 5. In some cases, the device has to be attached to the bracket and installed with it due to unnatural shape of the container, namely the surface of the lid. In order to get familiar with the idea of installing the sensor attached to the bracket, read the article Bracket as an Additional Mount. |
|
11 Match rivets with holes in the sensor (left rivet) |
Align drilled and sensor holes by slotting rivets through so that mandrel heads point down. Look at the picture of the Step 9. |
Mounting device by use of blind rivets is extremely reliable since they are permanently fastened in order to withstand environmental conditions and even severe vibrations in terms of vandalism and other applied pressure.
12 Match rivets with holes in the sensor (right rivet) |
Repeat the Step 10. | Since there is no melting of metal and uneven heating and cooling involved while joining process, thermal effects on the riveted joints are minimum. So it causes little or no damage to protective coatings of Nordsense device.
13 Use the rivet gun (left rivet) |
Place the pin of the rivet into the head of the rivet gun. Check that everything is aligned and squeeze the handle of the rivet gun together until you hear a snapping sound. Sometimes this might take two or three squeezes. | The rivet is "set" by drawing the stem through the shell, which causes the shell to deform and clamp the material securely. After the desired clamping force is achieved, the stem breaks off and is discarded.
14 Use the rivet gun (right rivet) |
Repeat the Step 12. | A small portion of the stem remains trapped in the bottom of the shell to ensure the clamping force is retained in the joint. Withdrawing the stem is done with special tools operated by hand, pneumatics or electricity.
15 Check the tightness of the installation |
By applying a small force, check how stable is the installation against potential vandalism. | Double-check if rivets were installed correctly to ensure the stability and longer life-span of the device.
16 Take a picture of the installed device |
For the quality check purpose, take multiple pictures of installed device. | If all the steps were performed successfully, it means that the device is functional and it will be possible to analyze the first data latest in 48 hours. |
